  • DESCRIPTION: A fine emblematical portrait of Benjamin Franklin.<br><br> The Greek philosopher Diogenes (left) supports the bust portrait of Franklin in a carved oval frame, the portrait being by Anne Rosalie Filleul, wearing a fur-trimmed robe over a loose shirt. Diogenes holds out his lantern; he supports the portrait on a stone block inscribed "Stupete gentes! Reperit vivum Diogenes"; behind him is a spear on whose point is a liberty cap. Along the lower edge are turnips and a cabbage, symbols of frugality, a staff, a broken yoke, an emblem of the power of England in America, an eagle from whose claws spring thunderbolts over a map of "Ameriq. Septent" In the sky is a bird which has been tethered by a cord flying away, symbolizing liberty.<br><br> A complex and rather handsome portrait of this great American Founding Father.
