Schoolcraft’s Narrative Journal of Travels through the Northwestern Regions of the United States, this engraving depicts the massive nugget of nearly pure copper that was long revered by the local Ojibwe people and later became a symbol of Michigan’s rich mining heritage. <br><br> The boulder, estimated to weigh over 3,700 pounds, was removed in the 1840s and eventually taken to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The print reflects 19th-century interest in natural resources and the industrial promise of the American Midwest.
