  • DESCRIPTION: The first stone bridge of London.<br><br> The construction of the bridge was begun in 1176 and completed in 1209 and lasted over 600 years. The bridge was torn down in 1831 after a new stone bridge was built. The original design of this bridge included gatehouses, homes, and shops along the length of the bridge. Along the lower edge of this print is a description and history of the bridge. This description begins with "At first there was but a ferry. . . ." Engraved by Sutton Nicholls.
