  • EDITION SIZE: Paper size 10 x 7 3/8" ( 25.3 x 18.7 cm)

  • DESCRIPTION: This portrait depicts Pe-Schick-Ee, a noted leader of the Chippewa (Ojibwe) people, rendered by James Otto Lewis during his travels among Native nations in the Great Lakes region. Lewis’s Aboriginal Portfolio was the first major color-plate publication devoted entirely to Native American subjects, preceding McKenney and Hall’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Issued between 1835 and 1836 in ten parts, the series captured numerous tribal dignitaries and emissaries who attended treaty councils during the 1820s and 1830s. Pe-Schick-Ee is portrayed in ceremonial attire, his expression composed and dignified, exemplifying Lewis’s effort to record both likeness and cultural presence rather than romantic stereotype. Surviving impressions from this early American lithographic series are now rare, as the project was plagued by financial difficulties and limited distribution.
