DESCRIPTION: Night Dance by Men, in Hapaee appears as Plate No. 16, Page 181 in the official atlas volume accompanying A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean… Undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere (London: W. and A. Strahan; T. Cadell; and Scatcherd & Whitaker, 1784). This plate was engraved by William Sharp after a drawing by John Webber, Cook’s expedition artist. It forms part of the folio of engravings issued to illustrate the narrative of Cook’s third voyage (1776–1780) aboard HMS Resolution and Discovery. The image depicts the heiva (night dance) performed by men on the island of Hapaee (Ha’apai), Tonga, one of the Friendly Isles, during Cook’s visit in May 1777.
