DESCRIPTION: This Italian engraving, titled Figura di un Forte Indiano, was published in Il Gazzettiere Americano, an Italian geographical encyclopedia of the Americas issued by the Remondini firm of Bassano around 1763–1765. The image is derived from Theodor de Bry’s Americae Pars Prima (1590), itself based on John White’s eyewitness drawings of the village of Pomeiooc. The scene presents a fortified Native American settlement surrounded by a defensive palisade, with dwellings, a council fire, and the distinctive temple structure identified by de Bry in the original. In this later Italian rendering, additional picturesque elements—including agricultural activity, European domestic animals, and a tropical landscape with palm and pine trees—were added to appeal to 18th-century audiences fascinated by the “New World.”
