DESCRIPTION: Built in 1867 by the Poillon Brothers at Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the Sappho was a schooner yacht of 310 tons, owned and commanded by William Proctor Douglas, Rear Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. Designed by William Townsend on the model of the celebrated yacht America, she measured roughly 155 feet overall with a beam of 27 feet. Noted for her speed and elegant lines, Sappho gained fame for her record-setting transatlantic passage from New York to Queenstown in 12 days, 9 hours, and 36 minutes, and for her successful defense of the America’s Cup in 1871. The vessel was among the most admired racing yachts of her era, symbolizing the height of 19th-century American yacht design and the prestige of the New York Yacht Club.
