  • ARTIST:

  • PUBLISHER: Published Brussels by Francois Foppens.

  • MEDIUM: Engraving,

    DATE: 1682

  • EDITION SIZE: Paper size 7 1/8 x 5 1/4" ( 18 x 13.3 cm)

  • DESCRIPTION: An engraved portrait of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, here titled Americ Vespuce, from Isaac Bullart’s monumental Academie des Sciences et des Arts, first issued in 1682. The image shows Vespucci in bust-length within an oval frame, facing slightly left, his features rendered with fine linear precision characteristic of the engravers Nicolas de Larmessin and Edme de Boulonois, who produced many of the portraits for this edition. Each portrait in the series was paired with a biographical text celebrating the subject’s life and achievements. This plate accompanies Vespucci’s entry among the great navigators and discoverers of the New World. Though the imprint often reads Paris or Amsterdam, bibliographers agree that the true publisher was Francois Foppens of Brussels. A handsome example of late seventeenth-century engraved portraiture celebrating figures of science and discovery.
