DESCRIPTION: An 18th-century vue d’optique of the quayside of Quebec, engraved and published in Augsburg by Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt around 1775. Designed for viewing through a zograscope, the print carries its French title reversed at the top—a deliberate feature that allowed the inscription to read correctly when seen through the optical device. The scene presents an imagined view of Quebec shortly after the British capture of the city in 1759, accompanied by descriptive text in both German and French. Typical of Leizelt’s North American series, the architecture blends European forms with second-hand knowledge of the colonies, reflecting how continental audiences envisioned the New World. Brightly handcolored and composed with sharp perspectival recession, the sheet is a characteristic example of Augsburg optical views intended as parlor entertainments in the late 18th century.
