DESCRIPTION: Drawn by Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere, engraved by B. B. Ellis.

William Henry Drayton (1742-1779) was born in South Carolina and educated in England. A student of classical studies in Oxford, England, Drayton later studied law upon returning to South Carolina. He visited England once again in 1770 and was appointed by King George III as privy councilor for the Province of South Carolina. His support of the pre-Revolutionary movements caused him to lose his appointment, but Drayton went on to serve as president of the council of safety, chief justice, and a member of the Continental Congress of 1778. He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1779. Drayton is most famous for his role as an energetic statesman and a notable political writer.
