DESCRIPTION: This print depicts Chlothar III, a seventh-century Merovingian king who ruled Neustria and Burgundy from 657 until 673, during a time when royal authority had become largely ceremonial and effective power was exercised by the mayors of the palace. Published in Venice by Bernardo Giunti in 1588 as part of Cronica breve de i fatti illustri de’ re di Francia, the engraving belongs to the chronicle’s orderly visual record of the French monarchy. Chlothar is presented in the series’ characteristic bust-length format, defined by firm, restrained linework that offers a clear and composed likeness. The portrait situates him within the late Merovingian era, a period marked by diminishing kingship and the gradual transition toward the Carolingian ascendancy.
