DESCRIPTION: This contemporary print portrays Commodore Stephen Decatur, one of the most celebrated American naval officers of the early nineteenth century, shown in connection with the capture of the frigate President on 15 January 1815. Decatur, already distinguished for his actions in the Barbary Wars and earlier War of 1812 engagements, attempted to break out of New York but was overtaken and disabled by HMS Endymion under Captain Henry Hope before being surrounded by additional British ships and compelled to surrender. Publish’d on March 27, 1815 by J. Whittle & R. H. Laurie of 53 Fleet Street, London, the print reflects the immediate public interest in the final naval actions of the war, offering British audiences a timely likeness of an opponent whose skill and audacity had long earned respect on both sides of the Atlantic.
