  • DESCRIPTION: A late seventeenth-century engraved portrait of the Flemish painter Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert, engraved by Nicolas II de Larmessin. The sitter is shown in three-quarter view, his head slightly turned, wearing a dark cloak and lace collar characteristic of mid-seventeenth-century Antwerp portraiture. The engraving belongs to a tradition of reproductive prints that disseminated the likenesses of notable artists working in Antwerp, reflecting posthumous interest in the circle of Anthony van Dyck and the painter’s legacy. Bosschaert, originally from Bergen op Zoom, became one of the leading history painters in Antwerp, known for his altarpieces and mythological subjects influenced by Rubens and Van Dyck. He passed in 1654, at the height of his career. The engraving is mounted to a backing sheet and presented in an elaborate 19th century passe partout. The passe partout creates a generous paper border around the print and serves as a period presentation method. The surround carries manuscript biographical notes on Willeboirts Bosschaert, likely added by a 19th century collector.
