  • MEDIUM: Etching with drypoint on chine colle

    DATE: 1886

  • EDITION SIZE: Image size 10 3/8 x 6 1/16" (26.3 x 15.4 cm)

  • DESCRIPTION: A finely executed etching and drypoint portrait of the French painter and draughtsman Paul Baudry, created by Charles Bellay in 1876 and here seen in the second state, with the added publication lettering of the Societe Francaise de Gravure, which formally issued the plate in Paris in 1886 (IFF, vol. 2, pp. 106–07, cat. no. 14). The image captures Baudry with a direct, reserved demeanor, his projecting elbow subtly separating the sitter from the viewer while the softness of his expression, the twist of his moustache, and the loose fall of his hair convey an underlying warmth and informality. Printed on chine colle mounted to a heavy wove support, this impression is richly inked and well-pulled.
