  • DESCRIPTION: George Grenville served as Prime Minister from 1763 to 1765 and is best known for introducing the Stamp Act of 1765, the first direct internal tax imposed by Parliament on the American colonies, requiring stamped paper for newspapers, legal documents, and other printed materials. Conceived in the aftermath of the Seven Years’ War, the act was intended to raise revenue and defray the cost of maintaining British troops in North America, and Grenville regarded it as a lawful and reasonable exercise of parliamentary authority, comparable to long-standing taxes in Britain. The measure provoked widespread colonial resistance, organized protest, and economic boycotts under the principle of “no taxation without representation,” and although it was repealed in 1766 after Grenville left office, the crisis it sparked marked a decisive escalation in imperial tensions and placed Grenville at the center of the political origins of the American Revolution.
