DESCRIPTION: Thomas Nast (1840-1902) is known as the "Father of the American Cartoon" because of his career as an editorial cartoonist. His works ranged from lighthearted to extremely heavy, even gruesome, for the times. He is perhaps best remembered for creating the ageless images of Santa Claus - as a jolly old fat man with a big bushy beard - the Republican elephant and the Democratic donkey. His cartoons also have the notoriety of having helped capture William Tweed (Boss Tweed) - they called out the politicians atrocities and, later, when Tweed escaped and fled to Spain, they assisted Spanish officials in identify and arrest him.
