  • DESCRIPTION: Printed sheet with addition text sheet tipped down along upper edge.<br><br> The Synod of Dordt and the Arminian Controversy. The Arminian controversy was a major 17th-century theological dispute in the Netherlands between followers of John Calvin and Jacobus Arminius, centering on soteriology (the study of salvation).<br><br> A detailed allegorical depiction mocking the Arminians. Central to the depiction is a tower with small scenes depicting the Arminians' exploits in the cities of Utrecht, Leiden, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Gouda, Schoonhoven, Hoorn, Alkmaar, and Kampen. On the tower are the innkeepers and personifications of Envy, Deception, Slander, Temptation, and Error. In the foreground are angels bearing a banner with the provincial coats of arms. To the left and right are towers with the Dutch Lion and Prince Maurice. In the sky are Fame and Time.
