"The print depicts 'Saint Monday," a 18th-19th century tradition where working-class artisans and journeymen took Monday off to drink and engage in leisure activities (such as playing skittles), extending their weekend. The image captures the social, often rowdy atmosphere of a "skittle ground" (a bowling alley) on such a day."
