The battle took place in Brooklyn - the Continental army was far out numbered in manpower and arms and eventually forced to retreat.<br><br> William Alexander Lord Stirling (1726-1783) One of George Washington's most loyal military subordinates during the American Revolution. He commanded a brigade at the Battle of Long Island, (Brooklyn), where his rearguard action resulted in his capture but allowed the main body of the army to escape.
