DESCRIPTION: This engraved portrait depicts Pieter Pietersz the Elder (c.1540–1603), the Amsterdam painter identified in the Latin inscription as Petrus Petri, Longus, Amstelr. Pictor “Pieter Pietersz the Tall, painter of Amsterdam.” The engraving, dated 1610, was produced several years after the artist’s death and belongs to the early seventeenth-century tradition of commemorative portrait prints honoring notable painters of the Dutch school.

Pieter Pietersz was an established master in Amsterdam during the later sixteenth century and was active at a moment when Netherlandish painting was transitioning from late Mannerist conventions toward the naturalism that would characterize the Dutch Golden Age. A pupil of Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem according to early sources, and active in a circle of prominent Amsterdam artists, Pietersz produced portraits, religious subjects, and civic works. His sobriquet Longus (“the tall”) appears in several contemporary references and served to distinguish him from other artists bearing the common patronymic Pietersz.
