• DESCRIPTION: After a painting by Alonzo Chappel. Engraved by James Smillie.

That fateful day, often remembered as the "shot heard 'round the world," marked the transition from colonial agitation to full-scale armed conflict. The events at Lexington and the North Bridge in Concord demonstrated that the localized militia could effectively stand against the professional British Army.

By the time the British retreated to Charlestown, they had suffered roughly 273 casualties, compared to the 95 casualties sustained by the Americans, signaling that a return to peaceful British rule was no longer possible.
