Smith was renowned for his technical mastery of the "dark manner," utilizing the rich, velvety textures of the mezzotint process to replicate the soft skin tones and luxurious fabrics characteristic of Kneller’s painterly style.

• CONDITION: A rich, velvety impression in good overall condition. The sheet has been trimmed to the image, with the title and publication lines no longer present. A faint horizontal crease is visible at the sitter’s waist level. A 1 1/2-inch tear at the top margin (approx. 1 1/2 inches from the left edge) has been professionally repaired and is stable.
