DESCRIPTION: A superb late 17th-century mezzotint portrait of the future Queen Anne, depicted during her tenure as Princess of Denmark. Engraved by the preeminent mezzotinter John Smith after the court painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller, this work captures the Princess in a three-quarter-length pose, reflecting the elegance and gravitas of the Stuart court. Smith was renowned for his technical mastery of the "dark manner," utilizing the rich, velvety textures of the mezzotint process to replicate the soft skin tones and luxurious fabrics characteristic of Kneller’s painterly style.
