DESCRIPTION: Engraving of Sir Nicholas Bacon (1510–1579), Lord Keeper of the Great Seal under Elizabeth I. This portrait was published in 1620 as part of Henry Holland’s landmark work, Heroologia Anglica (Praise of English Heroes). The volume was the first formulated collection of portraits of great English figures and was produced in the Netherlands at the expense of the celebrated Crispijn de Passe I, with the plates executed by his children, Magdalena and Willem. The engraving captures Bacon with the solemnity required of his high judicial office, wearing the formal robes and ruff of the Elizabethan court. As a chief architect of the Elizabethan religious and legal settlement and father of the philosopher Francis Bacon, Sir Nicholas remains a foundational figure of the era. The Heroologia series is prized by collectors for its fine Dutch craftsmanship and for being the definitive visual record of the Tudor and early Stuart elite.
