  • DESCRIPTION: A handsome lithograph showing the "Amazon," a 4-4-0 "American" type passenger locomotive manufactured by William Mason & Co. in 1856. Printed by the renowned Boston firm of L.H. Bradford & Co., this lithograph captures the "Amazon" as it was delivered to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O No. 25). The print highlights Mason’s revolutionary design contributions, most notably the round smoke box resting on a cylinder saddle—a departure from the square-based designs of his contemporaries. The "Amazon" earned a place in American lore as a Union workhorse during the Civil War and is frequently cited as the locomotive that pulled Abraham Lincoln's inaugural train into Washington D.C. in 1861. This specimen features the classic Mason aesthetic: a dark blue body, a design choice meant to emphasize the engine's clean, architectural lines, contrasted by the vibrant red of the drivers.
