DESCRIPTION: Tab 75. Lithospermum officinale L. (Common Gromwell). Known historically as "Stoneseed," this plant was traditionally employed in herbal medicine for its astringent properties and as a remedy for urinary tract issues and kidney stones. This engraving is from Plenck's scarce "Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum." This work was devoted to the medicinal properties of native European plants. Many had never been illustrated before. The engravings have a freshness and simplicity that charms collectors today.
