DESCRIPTION: British Maj. Patrick Ferguson led a Loyalist American militia attempting to secure the Carolina back country under orders from Lord Cornwallis. On Oct. 7, 1780, Ferguson and his loyal militia were routed at King's Mountain, North Carolina by frontier militiamen supporting the Revolution. The battle proved fatal for Ferguson as he was shot from his horse and dragged to the Continental lines by his stirrup. When he was approached to surrender, he pulled his pistol and shot a Continental soldier, he was then shot eight times and buried in an unmarked grave. In the 1920’s the King’s Mountain National Military Park, administered by the National Park Service, erected a marker at Ferguson’s gravesite.
