DESCRIPTION: This 1793 engraving depicts the famous 17th-century alewife known as Mother Louse, mistress of "Louse Hall" near Oxford. Published in London by C. Johnson, the print is based on an earlier portrait by David Loggan (c. 1635–1692). Mother Louse is shown in her characteristic high-crowned hat and ruff, reputedly the last woman in England at the time to wear one. She's depicted holding an ale tankard and a pitcher.
