  • DESCRIPTION: A view of the second dam built across the Connecticut River at Holyoke. The first dam was built in 1848 by the Hadley Falls Company. It was a timber dam filled with rubble and stone and at the time was the second longest in America. It did not last long, note even 24 hours. The dam pictured here was built in 1849 and lasted until it was replaced in 1900.
