• DESCRIPTION: A fine three-quarter length mezzotint portrait of Elizabeth, Countess of Dorset, after Sir Godfrey Kneller. She stands facing forward, turned slightly to the right, wearing flowing robes and a low-cut bodice in the elegant courtly manner associated with Kneller’s portraits.

This plate is a wonderful example of the English mezzotint school, with rich velvety blacks and subtle tonal gradations used to model the sitter’s face, the soft folds of her drapery, and the atmospheric depth of the background. The publication line, “J. Cooper ex.,” points to an early eighteenth-century issue, likely dating to around 1715, during the period in which John Faber the Younger was producing many of the finest mezzotint portraits after Kneller and his circle.
