• DESCRIPTION: This striking large-format lithograph commemorates Nathaniel Lyon, whose decisive actions in 1861 were instrumental in keeping Missouri within the Union. Upon learning of Governor Claiborne Jackson’s clandestine secessionist plans, Lyon aggressively moved to secure the St. Louis Arsenal and pursued the Missouri State Guard across the state. His leadership culminated in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek on August 10, 1861, where he was mortally wounded while rallying his outnumbered troops.

Produced shortly after his death, this portrait served as a memorial to a man who became an immediate martyr for the Union cause. The partnership of Thomas Wagner, a skilled lithographer known for his technical precision, and Alden Winch, a prominent Philadelphia stationer, resulted in a series of "Current War Figures". This is one such prints produced by the firm.
