DESCRIPTION: Andrea Doria. From Andre Thevet’s Les Vrais Pourtraits et Vies des Hommes Illustres Grecz, Latins, et Payens. Paris, Guillaume Chaudiere, 1584. Attributed to the workshop of Thomas de Leu and Leonard Gaultier. Copper plate engraving with letterpress text on verso. Issued in Thevet’s ambitious biographical compendium compiled while serving as Royal Cosmographer to Henri III, this Renaissance portrait depicts the famed Genoese admiral Andrea Doria holding a trident rather than the traditional commander’s baton, presenting him symbolically as “Il Principe del Mare,” ruler of the seas under Emperor Charles V.
