DESCRIPTION: This late eighteenth-century stipple and line engraving presents a formal, oval bust-portrait of the controversial Scottish historian and Whig journalist Gilbert Stuart, LL.D., facing slightly right in profile. He is depicted in contemporary dress with a powdered wig, a high-buttoned coat, and a white cravat, captured with the crisp, stippled draftsmanship characteristic of the period. Originally painted from life by John Donaldson and engraved by John Keyse Sherwin, the plate was published by John Sewell in Cornhill for the May 1782 issue of The European Magazine and London Review. The portrait's publication coincided precisely with the height of Stuart's notoriety, following the release of his combative History of Scotland (1782). Known for his fierce literary rivalries, caustic reviews, and a famously vitriolic public feud with institutional historian William Robertson, Stuart is captured here at the peak of his career during the Scottish Enlightenment.
