DESCRIPTION: Inscribed in the plate below the image centered in cursive script: "F. Bolt f. 1796." Inscribed below centered: "G. Washington. / 1796".

A crisp, lifetime portrait of George Washington by the German printmaker Johann Friedrich Bolt, executed entirely in pure stipple engraving. The image presents a finely balanced bust portrait, head turned three-quarters to the right, with the tonal gradations of the oval background built up entirely through delicate, varied stippling rather than line or cross-hatching.

This print belongs to the rare family of European contemporary portraits closely related to the miniature painted from life by Irish artist Walter Robertson in Philadelphia in December 1791. While Robertson's original design was famously criticized for its somewhat idealized, almost "Continental" flair.

An exceptionally rare and delicate lifetime portrait of the first President, produced for the contemporary European market during the final year of his second administration. A choice impression with excellent tonal contrast, preserved on a beautiful sheet of early wove paper.

CONDITION: Good condition. A truly fantastic impression.
