DESCRIPTION: This rare, late seventeenth-century copper engraving documents the celebrated 1686 Siamese embassy to the court of Louis XIV at Versailles. The subject is Kosa Pan, the chief diplomat sent by King Narai of Siam, whose residency in France created intense public fascination. Drawn and engraved directly from life (ad vivum) by Hainzelmann, the print depicts the ambassador half-length, clad in full ceremonial Siamese court attire and wearing the traditional conical lomphok headwear. This plate was issued as part of the specialized contemporary print suite Portraits des ambassadeurs de Siam, published to satisfy the French public's demand for authentic likenesses of the visiting delegation.
