  • DESCRIPTION: The plate illustrates Rumex aquaticus, commonly known as water dock, a moisture-loving perennial species found along riverbanks and wetlands throughout Europe. Traditionally, species of Rumex were employed in herbal medicine for their purgative, astringent, and cleansing properties, and were included in medical botanies because of their longstanding role in European pharmacological practice.<BR><BR> This engraving is from Plenck's scarce "Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum." This work was devoted to the medicinal properties of native European plants. Many had never been illustrated before. The engravings have a freshness and simplicity that charms collectors today.
