DESCRIPTION: Revolutionary War era European portrait of Commodore John Paul Jones, engraved by Carl Guttenberg after the design by Claude Jacques Notte. This engraving is one of the depictions of the naval hero produced during the war, capturing the public fascination that swept France following his victory aboard the Bonhomme Richard over the HMS Serapis off Flamborough Head in September 1779.

The portrait depicts Jones on deck mid-battle, clad in a naval uniform and tricorn hat, extending a drawn cutlass in his right hand. His likeness is presented within a large, stone-textured oval frame set against a classical pedestal block. In the background, a chaotic sea battle rages, with rigging and shattered masts piercing through dense plumes of cannon smoke.

The extensive French title and publication line below the image read: "John Paul Jones / Commodore au Service des Etats-Unis de l'Amerique, tel qu'il étoit dans le combat du 23 7bre 1779 contre le Captre Pearson... A Paris ches Esnauts et Rapilly, rue St. Jacques, à la Ville de Coutances."

Translated, the inscription reads: "John Paul Jones, Commodore in the Service of the United States of America, as he was in the combat of September 23, 1779, against Captain Pearson. In Paris at [the shop of] Esnauts and Rapilly, rue St. Jacques, at the sign of the City of Coutances."
