DESCRIPTION: Engraving and etching by Charles-Etienne Gaucher after a portrait by Francois-Jean Sablet, published in Paris by Honore-Thomas Bligny. The portrait is accompanied by a contemporary verse praising Charles Henri Hector, Comte d'Estaing, as both a soldier and admiral, and celebrates his victories over England and his defense of French honor.

Charles Henri Hector, Comte d'Estaing (1729-1794), served as Lieutenant General of the King's armies and Vice Admiral of France. Following the Franco-American alliance of 1778, he commanded the first major French fleet sent to support the American colonies in their struggle for independence. He participated in the campaign against Newport, Rhode Island, in 1778 and led the combined French and American assault on Savannah, Georgia, in 1779, where he was wounded while directing the attack. Though neither operation achieved its objective, d'Estaing's campaigns tied down British naval forces and marked the beginning of France's active military support for the American cause, a commitment that would ultimately culminate in the victory at Yorktown.
