  • DESCRIPTION: Portrait of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton (1757-1854), engraved after the 1784 painting by Ralph Earl and published by D. Appleton & Co. The inscription notes that the original portrait was then in the possession of Mrs. James A. Hamilton of Dobbs Ferry, New York. Elizabeth is shown seated holding a fan, with drapery and a column in the background.<br><br> Born into the prominent Schuyler family of New York, Elizabeth married Alexander Hamilton in 1780 and was his wife for twenty-four years. After his death in 1804, she spent much of the remainder of her long life preserving his papers and correspondence, efforts that played an important role in safeguarding the historical record of one of the nation's Founding Fathers. She was also active in charitable work and helped establish the Orphan Asylum Society in New York in 1806. Elizabeth Hamilton lived until 1854, spanning nearly the entire history of the early Republic and serving as a living link to the Revolutionary generation.
