  • DESCRIPTION: Early lithographic portrait of Konrad Paulmann (1410-1473), the renowned German musician, composer, and teacher who achieved fame despite losing his sight in childhood. Shown in three-quarter profile wearing a cap and dark robe, Paulmann is depicted in the traditional manner with closed eyes. During the fifteenth century he served at the courts of Saxony and Brandenburg and enjoyed the patronage of Emperor Frederick III. Revered by contemporaries for his musical ability and memory, Paulmann became one of the most celebrated blind musicians of the Renaissance. Issued only a few decades after the invention of lithography, this uncommon 1816 portrait reflects the early nineteenth century's interest in notable figures from German history
