DESCRIPTION: Early lithographic portrait of Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752-1814), the German composer, conductor, writer, and music critic. Issued shortly after his death and lithographed by Wintter, the print depicts one of the leading musical figures of late eighteenth-century Germany.<br><br> Born in Konigsberg, Reichardt studied law before devoting himself to music and entered the service of Frederick the Great, who appointed him Kapellmeister in 1775. During his career he composed operas, symphonies, sacred works, and more than fifteen hundred songs, many based on the poetry of Goethe and other leading writers of the period. He traveled extensively and maintained associations with many of the foremost intellectuals and musicians of his day.
