DESCRIPTION: A German portrait etching of Benedict Arnold produced during the height of the American Revolutionary War by an anonymous printmaker working from likenesses then in circulation. The title in German reflects the considerable Continental European interest in the American conflict, as German mercenary forces (Hessians) were actively engaged on the British side and broadside portraits of American commanders found an interested audience abroad. What makes this impression exceptional is period hand coloring that depicts Arnold not in Continental Army dress as the title would suggest, but in a British officer's uniform. This alteration was almost certainly made in the immediate aftermath of his defection to the British in 1780.
