The Unrivalled Express Rider, Ginery Twichell. : Who rode from Worcester to Hartford, a distance of sixty miles in 3 hours & 20 minutes, through a deep snow, Jan. 23rd, 1846.

  • DESCRIPTION: Signed directly behind Mr. Ginery Twichell states: "50 Miles to Hartford" (arrow pointing to the left) & "10 Miles to Worcester" (arrow pointing to the right). The rider is approaching an Inn and a train with two cars is not far behind. Ginery Twichell (1811-1883) ran a stage line between Barre and Worcester MA during the early 1830s. His business grew to include other areas of New England and the new Boston and Worcester Railroad (B&W). In 1848 Twichell became superintendent of the railroad and by 1857 was the president of Boston and Worcester Railroad. Signed in the stone, lower left corner - Baker, del.
