  • DESCRIPTION: This scarce lithograph from "DAS ILLUSTRIERTE MISSISSIPPITHAL" (The Valley of the Mississippi Illustrated) was printed by C. H. Muller in Aachen. In the late 1840s, Henry Lewis traveled the length of the Mississippi River, creating sketches that detailed its scenery and life along its banks, including depictions of flatboat men. Based on these sketches, Lewis painted an extensive panorama designed to be viewed through a frame, which toured American cities starting in 1848. In 1853, during a European tour, Lewis collaborated with publisher Heinrich Arnz in Düsseldorf to convert the sketches into lithographs for a book. Despite sporadic production and limited profitability, the resulting seventy-eight lithographs provide an early, comprehensive record of the Mississippi River. Although the title suggests the town depicted is on the Iowa side, it is actually in Illinois.
