By building it as a narrow gauge line, the locomotives were better able to handle the treacherous terrain. <br><br> Denver and Rio Grande Railroad: Established in the late 19th century, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG) was instrumental in opening up the American West. It connected Denver, Colorado, with various mining towns, scenic destinations, and eventually extended into Utah and New Mexico.
