DESCRIPTION: Engraved by William Forrest. This is a good example of Frederic Church's highly important engraving. The original painting measures over 5 x 10 feet and resides in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. When first exhibited, this painting was widely acclaimed for ushering in a new era in American art. The painting was sent to London where the plate for this engraving was published by J. M. Mc Clure. The acclaimed engraver William Forrest, noted for his landscape and genre prints, was chosen to reproduce the painting in the medium of engraving. The prints were sold in three different formats, signed artist's proofs (without title) were sold for $30.00; untitled proofs $20.00; and titled prints were $10.00. This print is an example of a the untitled proof.
