  • DESCRIPTION: This botanical engraving depicts Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia), an exotic climbing orchid that Catesby included in his final Appendix to document the diverse flora of the West Indies and Mexico. Catesby’s work was among the first to illustrate this species with such scientific clarity, focusing on the succulent stem and the intricate floral structure that distinguishes the plant. This plate is from the 1771 third edition, which marked a significant transition in natural history; it was the first printing to include a Linnaean index, bringing Catesby’s field observations into the modern era of scientific classification. Printed by Benjamin White at Horace’s Head, this edition is highly regarded for its crisp impressions and the vibrant hand-coloring that defines the 18th-century folio format.
