DESCRIPTION: One of the finest mid-nineteenth portraits of the first President.<br><br> Signed in pencil "Wm. E. Marshall" and proofed by the National Bank Note Company. Based on the painting by Gilbert Stuart that hangs in the Boston Athenaeum.<br><br> An impression of Marshall's portrait of Washington had the dubious honor of hanging on the bunting below the President's box at Ford's Theater when President Lincoln was assassinated.<br><br> Marshall would issue a finely engraved portrait of Lincoln in 1866.
