De Neufville of Amsterdam. Publish’d by appointment of M. De Neufville Janry. 15th 1781, by V. Green, N. 29, Newman Street, Oxford Street, London. The artist, John Trumbull, was an officer in the Continental Army from 1775 to 1777. For a few weeks, he even served George Washington as his aide-de-camp. Trumbull painted this image of Washington from memory while he was studying under Benjamin West in London. To the right of Washington his body servant William (Billy) Lee holds his horse and to the left is a vista of West Point. The original painting was in the possession of the international banking house of John De Neufville & Son of Amsterdam and remained there for a century until bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
