The Catawba was built by Alexander Swift & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Niles Tool Works, Hamilton, Ohio. The vessel was launched 13 April 1864 and delivered to the Navy on 7 June 1865. Specification listed to the left and right of title: "Length 224 feet; Beam 43 ft. 3 in.; Depth of Hold 12 ft.; Draft of Water 12 ft.; Inside Diam of Turret 21 ft.; Two 15 inch Guns. (right side) Two Ericsson's Patent Engines. Diameter of Cylinder 48 in.; Length of Stroke 2 ft.; Diameter of Propeller 14 ft.; Pitch of ...... do 20 ft.; Number of Blades 4."
