  • DESCRIPTION: This engraving celebrated the Great Compromise of 1850 that helped to delay the U.S. Civil War for ten years. Shown prominently are twenty-two leading politicians of the day including Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, and Samuel Houston. Approximately nine years later the plate was reworked with a number of the principal figures being altered. These changes reflected a more pro-Union stance. The most noticeable change is Calhoun's head being supplanted by a beardless Abraham Lincoln. In a third edition, he had a beard. First state of three. Engraved by H. S. Sadd.
